Question: Ask the Rabbi - Is a Steamship Round Cut of Beef Kosher?
Dear Rabbi,
We keep kosher, and have invited a large crowd to a barbecue. Is a Steamship Round cut of beef a kosher cut? If this is not kosher, can you suggest a kosher cut that is similar?
Thank you. The Levines

Answer: Dear Levines,
Thanks for writing. The cut to which you refer is the hind quarter or rear leg. It is not a kosher cut, and no reliably kosher butcher would provide it.
I use brisket, beef short ribs and lamb ribs for my bbq, with a dry or wet bbq rub/spices on all meat. With brisket, I use both the first cut and the second cut known as the dekel (more fatty and often not served by caterers). The dekel in particular can be braised for a long time and then made into a kosher "pulled beef" with a bbq sauce and served on a kaiser roll. I bbq all meats, including chicken, using slow, low, reflected heat.
Sorry to tell you that Steamship Round cut is not kosher.
