The Bottom Line

My teenage son bet a girl in his class that he could refrain from eating meat longer than she could. He won the bet, and I won a vegetarian to feed in my home. It has been a bit challenging for me to plan and prepare varied nutritious and delicious meatless meals for him each day. So I was thrilled when ESRA's Meatless Meals cookbook arrived! The dishes I prepared from the book were inhaled by my son as well as my other children. Now every time I need to think of a vegie dish to add to the menu, I have my source!

  • Grassroots collection of practical recipes
  • Cream of the crop collection as recipes are the best from almost 50 contributors

Guide Review - ESRA's Meatless Meals

ESRA’s Meatless Meals cookbook - healthy vegetarian recipes in a user-friendly format - meets two of my ever-pressing needs. I am always seeking easy-to-make, delicious-to-eat vegetarian recipes for my family and Shabbat guests. And I am always on the lookout for special gifts from Israel I can give to family and friends.

ESRA’s Meatless Meals includes recipes for vegetable sides and mains, fish, pasta, quiches, kugels, rice, lentils, tofu, wraps as well as egg and cheese dishes. The book does not contain any dessert recipes, but it offers eight different tofu recipes and some unique ideas for wraps.

This kosher vegetarian collection of recipes is unique in several ways. The recipes are practical as they come from homemakers rather than chefs. The recipes are the tried and tested favorites from the recipe collections of almost 50 different cooks. And recipes come from English-speaking residents of Israel.

The paperback, spiral-bound book is affordable, and proceeds from the book go to a good cause. The English Speaking Residents Association (ESRA) is a dedicated group of native English-speaking volunteers raising funds to support community projects in the areas of special needs, social problems and training programs for immigrants to Israel.
