The sweet crunch of green beans is a great compliment to a variety of dishes and cuisines, and this teriyaki green beans recipe will lend some umami flavor to your favorite dishes.

The recipe is written with frozen vegetables in mind (including optional baby carrots), which makes the preparation very easy, and it gives them an instant upgrade with this sesame green beans recipe. You can use fresh green beans instead if you prefer.

Gently flavored with teriyaki, extra virgin olive oil, and garlic and tossed with sesame seeds, they're the perfect complement to a meat and potato dinner. But this vegetable side would also taste great with stir-fried tofu and rice, or grilled salmon or chicken. The green beans would also pair well with any kind of steak dish.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound green beans, frozen and thin

  • 1/4 to 1/2 pound baby carrots, frozen, optional

  • 2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil

  • 3 cloves garlic, peeled and finely chopped

  • 1 teaspoon teriyaki sauce

  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds

Steps to Make It

  1. Bring a small amount of water to a boil in a large saucepan. Add the green beans and cook until crisp-tender. (You can also use a vegetable steamer.) Drain. If you are using carrots as well, steam them until cooked through and drain.

  2. Warm the oil in a chef's pan or large skillet set over medium-high heat. Add the garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute.

  3. Add the steamed vegetables and sauté to coat with the olive oil and garlic.

  4. Stir in the teriyaki sauce. Add the sesame seeds and toss to coat.

  5. Remove from the heat and transfer to a serving bowl. Serve warm.

Tip

For extra sesame flavor, drizzle the cooked green beans with a bit of sesame oil.

Variation

  • Green beans go well with mushrooms, Add 1 cup of chopped mushrooms, any kind, to this dish with the green beans and/or baby carrots. They will cook in a hurry.
  • Sugar snap peas are also delicious with teriyaki sesame flavors.
  • If you'd like to add a little more flavor, feel free to saute some finely chopped shallots along with the minced garlic cloves, along with some minced or grated fresh ginger.

How to Store and Freeze Teriyaki Green Beans

  • Any leftovers of this dish will keep in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 5 days. Reheat over medium low heat, or toss into other dishes such as fried rice.
  • Teriyaki green beans can also be frozen. Make sure they're in an airtight container or a zip-close freezer bag with as much air pressed out of it as possible before freezing. Freeze for 3 months and reheat in a skillet over medium heat until completely hot.
