Meet Susie
Read an interview with Susie Fishbein, author of the Kosher by Design cookbook series, the most popular kosher cookbook series in print today. Throughout Jewish and non-Jewish homes in North America, kitchens host her Passover by Design, Lightens Up, Kids in the Kitchen, Entertains, Short on Time and the original Picture-Perfect Food.
Kosher by Design: Lightens Up, by Susie Fishbein
In her cookbook Kosher by Design: Lightens Up, Susie Fishbein combines Biblical Dietary Laws with the latest nutrition information to create healthy, kosher recipes.
Susie Fishbein's Marrakesh Carrot Salad (Parve)
Several small dishes filled with various, colorful salads adds a festive and elegant touch to the table. I like to serve this Marrakesh Carrot Salad, from Susie Fishbein's cookbook Kosher by Design Lightens Up, on Friday night along side small dishes filled with Beet Salad, Kohlrabi Salad, Eggplant Salad, Avocado Salad, Matboucha and/or Hummus.
Susie Fishbein's Creamy Garlic Salad (Parve)
In reviewing Susie Fishbein's cookbooks, I have permission to put three recipes from each book online. It is never an easy task to choose three from the many gems Fishbein includes in her books. I chose this recipe - Creamy Garlic Salad from Kosher by Design Lightens Up - because I could see myself making this delicious, healthy, parve lettuce salad often throughout the year.
Susie Fishbein's House Salad (Parve)
Every kitchen should have a House Salad, and I'm adopting one for my kitchen from the Kosher Diva herself, Susie Fishbein. In her cookbook, Kosher by Design Lightens Up, Fishbein offers this perfect, parve House Salad.
Passover by Design, by Susie Fishbein
Susie Fishbein's Passover by Design cookbook contains over 130 Passover-adjusted recipes from her other cookbooks, as well as 30 brand-new Passover recipes, full-color photos and Passover decorating ideas.
Susie Fishbein's Purple Cabbage Salad (Parve)
Susie Fishbein includes this recipe for Purple Cabbage Salad in her Passover by Design cookbook. This colorful salad, contributed by her friend Beth Eidman, can be prepared early in the day of the Passover Seder and then served as a Pesach salad or side dish.
Susie Fishbein's Dry Rub Short Ribs (Meat)
Susie Fishbein includes this recipe for Dry Rub Short Ribs in her Passover by Design cookbook. She writes that the slow braise in wine makes these ribs melt-in-your-mouth delicious. And she suggests serving them over mashed potatoes.
Susie Fishbein's Lemon Meringue (Parve)
Susie Fishbein calls this is a fabulous Passover dessert. The three components - meringues, lemon cream, and chocolate-dipped nuts can all be prepared 2-3 days in advance and assembled right before the Seder. This meringue dessert is also a delicious, year-round gluten-free dessert.
Kosher by Design: Picture-Perfect Food for the Holidays & Every Day
If you are a kosher cook, like to entertain and plan to buy only one cookbook, let it be Susie Fishbein's Kosher by Design. The book contains clearly written, triple-tested, beautifully illustrated, kosher recipes as well as food presentation ideas for refined yet relaxed hosting. With its Jewish holiday information and menus, this cookbook makes a valuable addition to every kosher kitchen.
Susie Fishbein's Chef's Salad (Meat)
The classic Chef's Salad recipe, which includes meat and cheese, is not kosher. Fortunately Susie Fishbein has created a kosher recipe for Chef's Salad. Susie's Kosher Chef's Salad taste wonderful, and it makes the perfect appetizer for a Sabbath meal. Mix the salad right before the meal and serve portions on individual plates. Easy and delicious!
Susie Fishbein's Parmesan-Crusted Grouper (Dairy)
The recipes in Susie Fishbein's kosher cookbooks always lead to crowd-pleasing dishes - delicious and beautiful. The recipes in her cookbooks with few ingredients and simple instructions, such as this Parmesan-Crusted Grouper, are my favorites.
Susie Fishbein's Roast Turkey with Caramelized Onion-Balsamic Gravy (Meat)
If Susie Fishbein writes "I love this turkey recipe", then I've got to make it! I can't hide my enthusiasm for what Fishbein has done for kosher cooking. At the same time she has raised the quality and made it more accessible to novice cooks. Since every Fishbein recipe I've tried has been a huge success, I'm going to use her kosher Roast Turkey with Caramelized Onion-Balsamic Gravy recipe this Thanksgiving.
Kosher by Design: Kids in the Kitchen
Kosher by Design: Kids in the Kitchen, by Susie Fishbein, is the first cookbook I would purchase when looking to spend time in the kitchen with my kids. The book's colorful designs inspire children to cook. The book's easy-to-read recipes, safety rules, equipment glossary and kosher information help children to become competent in the kitchen.
Susie Fishbein's Stuffed Baked Potatoes for Kids (Parve or Dairy)
Once again Susie Fishbein offers an easy-to-make and delicious-to-eat kosher recipe. This Stuffed Baked Potatoes recipe comes from Fishbein's children's cookbook, Kosher by Design: Kids in the Kitchen. Bake the potato, and then top it with sour cream and chives, salsa cheddar or broccoli cheddar toppings. YUM!
Susie Fishbein's Meringue Surprise Kisses for Kids (Parve)
Meringue cookies take time to prepare and bake, but the work itself is simple. I made these meringues with my 6-year-old, as the recipe came from Susie Fishbein's Kosher by Design: Kids in the Kitchen cookbook. When the cookies came out of the oven, I was surprised to find the best-tasting meringues I've ever eaten.
Susie Fishbein's Chocolate Croissants Recipe for Kids (Dairy or Parve)
Who would think to put a delicacy like croissants in a kosher cookbook for children? Susie Fishbein, of course. Susie has developed a recipe for Chocolate Croissants that is simple enough for children to make, and tasty enough for both children and adults to eat!
Kosher by Design: Entertains
If you love to cook, have time to cook, have a well-equiped and stocked kitchen, and like to creatively entertain, then Kosher by Design: Entertains may be the cookbook for you. I, on the other hand, personally preferred Fishbein's simpler cookbooks.
Susie Fishbein's Farfalle Chicken (Meat)
Looking for a great-tasting, good-looking, one-skillet chicken dish that all your guests - young and old - will love? Susie Fishbein provides this winning recipe for Farfalle Chicken in her Kosher by Design: Entertains cookbook.
Susie Fishbein's Moussaka Recipe (Meat)
Sometimes, for a special occasion, it is worthwhile to invest in a dish. This Moussaka, from Susie Fishbein's Kosher by Design Entertains cookbook, is one of those dishes. The recipe requires a few more ingredients and a bit more effort, but your guests will remember dining with you in your home.
Susie Fishebein's Pumpkin Doodle Cookie Recipe (Parve or Dairy)
This is another unique, easy to make, and amazingly delicious recipe from Susie Fishbein. The recipe comes from her Kosher by Design - Entertains cookbook. I serve these parve Pumpkin Doodle Cookies, next to Chocolate Pecan Pie and Apple Pie, for dessert on Thanksgiving.
Kosher by Design: Short on Time
If you are short on time, but enjoy serving innovative and delicious kosher meals, then Kosher by Design Short on Time is the perfect cookbook for you. This focused cookbook contains 140 quality kosher recipes with quick prep times. Thanks to Susie Fishbein, today’s busy cooks can prepare and serve creative, eye-pleasing and scrumptious home-cooked kosher meals.
Susie Fishbein's Caramelized Onions (Parve)
Susie Fishbein knows how to make the novice cook feel comfortable in the kitchen. This Caramelized Onions recipe is one of the Building Block recipes she offers in her Kosher by Design Short on Time cookbook. These Caramelized Onions can be made once and then used many times to dress up a variety of recipes.
Susie Fishbein's Roasted Garlic (Parve)
Susie Fishbein's Roasted Garlic, which requires just five minutes prep time, comes from her Kosher by Design Short on Time cookbook. Spread it on Shabbos challah, on chicken or fish, and on baguettes for a delicious garlic bread. Add it to mashed potatoes, pasta or pasta sauces, to salad dressings, and to mayonnaise for a great hamburgers or grilled tuna topping. This is a must-add to your cooking repertoire.
Susie Fishbein's Kettle Corn (Parve)
Popcorn is a wonderful kosher snack. Since it is pareve, it can be eaten after both meat and dairy meals. And Kettle Corn is an especially wonderful treat, with its combined salty and sweet flavor. This Kettle Corn recipe comes from Susie Fishbein's Kosher by Design Short on Time cookbook.
