Baked Sesame Teriyaki Tofu

Perhaps my vegetarian friends were afraid they would go home hungry. Whatever the reason, I'm glad they brought this Baked Sesame Teriyaki Tofu dish with them to Friday night dinner. We enjoyed this healthy, tasty side dish for dinner that night, and since then we have gotten in the habit of preparing it often for Shabbat. It is so easy to make that my kids can prepare it all by themselves.

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 block firm tofu (approximately 8 ounces or 250 grams)
  • sesame oil
  • sesame teriyaki sauce (use thick sauces like Mikee or Trader Joe's)

Preparation:

1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lay a piece of parchment paper on a cookie sheet.
2. Slice tofu into medium slices, and lay them flat on paper.
3. Brush each slice with a bit of sesame oil until just coated.
4. Then brush each slice with a more generous amount of Sesame Teriyaki sauce.
5. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 20 minutes, or until cooked through.

Tip: It is best to drain tofu cakes before working with them. Drain tofu cakes by wrapping in paper towels and placing under a cutting board. Weigh down cutting board by placing some canned goods on top. Let stand for 10 minutes. Unwrap the tofu cakes.

Variation: For a spicier dish, brush some Sweet Chili Sauce onto the tofu slices along with the Sesame Teriyaki sauce.

Yield: 4 servings

Serving Suggestions: Serve warm or at room temperature.
